BROKEN WINGS: AMBITIONS

DISCLAIMER

Broken Wings: Ambitions is being developed for the up and coming Feral Fiction. Through the wonders of patent pending AI technology, Feral Fiction allows 'readers' to step into the shoes of a central character and interact freely with surrounding characters while progressing through the plot of the narrative. More information about Feral Fiction is available at its website: www.feralfiction.com

When reading through the scenes, an important thing to bear in mind is that, as the player is cast into the role of the main character, each scene sets the stage for the player to drive the conversations and advance the plot. Put simply, imagine what you would say in the shoes of the central character. In a Feral Fiction adventure, you could actually say it and all surrounding AI-driven characters will do so while keeping with their own unique personalities, accents, and quirks.

SCENE 1

After completing his required work assignment, gunnery sergeant Reynald Parks, or Redge as he is called by others, had retreated to his compact bunk aboard the missile frigate PAS Ackland. A peaceful, distant hum fills the bunk room as Redge lounges on his bunk. The time is displayed on the wall shows thirty minutes past the end of gold shift and the start of his free time due to having no other pressing duties for the day.

A beep sounds from a speaker near the clock and the voice of Edward, the ship’s artificial intelligence rings out over the speaker located next to the wall. “Just lounging are you? If you’re short of something productive to do, why don’t you go see Stripes in the reactor section. I think he’s about to go catatonic over work assignments and could use some help.”

SCENE 2

The gentle hum of the Edzroda Mk2 fusion reactor fills the air as Chief Engineer Dawrson Khajeen utters something in the native tongue of his race, which sounds something like a rapid series of flowing words interspersed by mildly guttural hissing that may be translatable into swear words. Dawrson is a member of the humanoid, feline-like Kaijole race. He has tan fur with broad orange stripes that contain darker orange cores that go across his back, the outside of his arms, tops of his legs and wrap around his tail, leading him to be dubbed Stripes by his crewmates, despite his own thoughts on the matter. He, like the rest of the engineering crew, wears olive green, insulated jumpsuits that are affectionately called pukes or pukies. His dark orange hair is done up in the typical short military style for males, referred to as a dummy cut as ‘any dummy could give a haircut that was all a single length.’

His longer fingernails, which are thicker and stronger than a human’s, make a screeching noise as they scratch along the side of the console in front of him. After a few moments of silence he finally takes notice of Redge. “Seen as bad crew or not … Why is time wasted with … empty patrols after doing so much? Would not be so bad without so many repeated diagnostics. All say the same thing.” He points at an engineering datapad and says, “Captain Mitch wanted it. He might be in conference room. I have work to do. Some systems not agreeing together.”

SCENE 3

The door opens automatically as Redge approaches the door to the conference room featuring a chairs mounted to the floor around a large, rectangular table. Sitting at the head of the table is a short, stocky man with slightly darkened skin who spins his chair around to face Redge as he enters. The man, Commander Robert Mitchel has hair cut to slightly longer than regulation length, has a white and blue officer’s jacket that is entirely unbuttoned. The jacket’s matching hat is laying upside down on the conference table next to a variety of datapads, print-outs, and empty folders.

Seated to Mitch’s right is Captain Micah Deem, the ship’s command chief who is a member of the tall, tiger-like Tahmet race. Micah’s seemingly perpetual calm expression is unbroken as Mitch casually reaches and mutters, “Just hand it here.”

Mitch’s face takes on a slightly distant expression as he begins quickly going through the contents of the datapad. “Looks like it’s all here.” Without wasting a moment, Mitch turns back to the table and begins sorting through a mass of datapads and printouts. “Get the team together. You’ll probably find at least one of ‘em in the gym. And just call me Mitch.”

SCENE 4

The sound of Kite yelling fills the air as the door to the cramped gym opens. “That’s it! Get him! Knock his block off!” The voice is coming from  a shorter woman as she directs her aggressive nature toward the boxing match in a padded area that takes up the foremost part of the narrow room.

Kite tenses like a compressed spring as Redge nears her, as though she has some uncanny sense about whenever someone is in a blind spot. She glances back and her posture relaxes as a mildly hostile smile forms. “Not here to give me another reprimand, are you?” She fixes her piercing green eyes on Redge and makes a dismissive gesture. “Just ignore it if some pukie complains about a tray hitting ‘em upside the head. He completely deserved it.”

Before Redge responds, a particularly loud thud could be heard coming from the ring followed by a deeper voice with a surprisingly soothing quality to it asking, “Man. Are yah okay? Thought you’d dodge that.”

“Yeah. Yeah,” says the other man as he took off his pads and stumbled out of the ring toward the supply closet. “Think I just gotta go get some meds for the headache now. Mind gett’en the pads wiped down? Thanks.” Without waiting for a response, the man dumps the pads into the closet and makes for the door.

Kite looks up at the tall, thickly built and muscular man with a crooked grin. “Good job! Ya really show’d him one!”

Gut sighs and rubs the back of his head with his left hand while grinning nervously. A blush can just barely be seen peeking through his dark brown skin. “Well, I really whuddent try’en to hit him that hard.” He cringes for a moment as he looks toward the door. He sighs and turns his attention to Redge. “So, what brought yah here, Redge?”

SCENE 5

The med bay, like most everywhere else on the ship, is cramped with two surgical beds on the aft side of the room and a tiny desk and a series of three beds on a lift system that allow patients to be stacked up vertically. Lizza, a human woman with brunette hair, light complexion, and blue eyes, is the on-duty nurse. She is sitting at the desk performing inventory. Dr. Sundraski, a member of the Biume race which is a shorter blue-skinned humanoid race, is conducting a short examination of the man Gut was boxing with utilizing a portable scanner.

Gut enters and looks on nervously. “He ain’t hurt too bad, is he?”

Dr. Sundraski, who is often simply called Dr Sune, chuckles. “No. He is quite fine. Just a minor concussion is all, though I will have to ask you to restrain yourself a little more, at least for the next few days.”

Gut tilts his head and looks down at the doctor. “Why just for the next few days?”

“I’m not certain, but I feel our captain will have an answer to that," said Doctor Sune. "But since it looks like you're gathering the team together, might I suggest the mess? I believe Gox spends a lot of his spare time there. After that, you may find Cade in a theater."
